Natural Ingredients for Joint Health

Joint pain can be caused by diseases such as arthritis, gout, lupus, fibromyalgia, an injury--or even by the over use of a particular joint. Obesity is also a major contributing factor. In fact, studies show that being obese can increase your risk for joint pain. Considering that nearly 60 percent of Americans are overweight, joint pain is a common occurrence.

Conventional Drugs
Drugs regularly administered for joint pain include Over-The-Counter (OTC) non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), Ibuprofen, Aspirin and many others. While these OTC medications do significantly reduce pain, they only treat the symptoms of joint pain, without addressing the real cause. Such treatments may also have side effects that could come with long term or repeated use. Side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances, which could increase the risk for digestive tract erosion and lead to internal bleeding, liver failure or in extreme cases even death. According to a review article published in the New England Journal of Medicine, "Anti-inflammatory drugs contribute to the cause of 16,500 deaths and more than 103,000 hospitalizations per year in the US." At approximately age 45, the ability to repair and restore damage to the body begins to lessen.

People who take NSAIDS regularly to relieve joint pain may want to consider an alternative. There is an increasing amount of research available that supports alternative methods for patients who suffer from all types of joint pain—this research has indicated that many alternative treatments have positive results. Many doctors have also begun prescribing herbals as well, raising the credibility of natural ingredients.

Natural Ingredients
Research exploring herbs and certain botanicals for naturopathic use has been abundant recently. Not only can naturopathic formulas help to relieve pain, but they can also nutritionally assist the body in delaying the progression of most joint pains, by supporting joint health. Unlike OTC and conventional drugs taken for joint pain, herbal supplements have few known side effects.

Stiffness of joints, loss of mobility and joint pains are all symptoms of aging joints. Age may lessen the body's ability to manufacture and absorb certain nutrients necessary to repair joint cartilage and keep joints lubricated. Supplying these nutrients to the body will help to nutritionally aid joint health and support flexibility. Natural ingredients contain nutrients or compounds that stimulate the body's natural ability to manufacture these nutrients.

To help you in your search for natural ingredients and to explain how they effect in the body, here are some ingredients you should look for in an herbal joint health supplement.

Glucosamine Sulfate
Glucosamine is a precursor for glycosaminoglycan, which is an important component in connective tissues, especially joint cartilage. Glucosamine sulfate derived from shellfish is believed to nutritionally help strengthen your body's cartilage and help in the synthesis of glycosaminoglycan. Studies show that Glucosamine sulfate may help to support comfortable joints.. Studies have also pointed to glucosamine sulfate's ability to help the body in promoting cartilage growth, thereby supporting mobility and flexibility of joints.1-3

The Mayo Clinic states that there is strong scientific evidence to validate the use of glucosamine sulfate in mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis. There is also good scientific evidence for its use in arthritis.

MSM
MSM stands for Methylsulfonylmethane. It is a dietary supplement that is commonly used to comfort aching muscles. It works in combination with glucosamine sulfate and may enhance its efficacy, providing dual action support for joint pain. 4

Natto Kinase
Natto Kinase is an enzyme produced from boiled, fermented soybeans. There are promising studies which show that Natto Kinase is safe-to-use. It supports healthy circulation and has no known side effects.5

Boswellin
Boswellin, a natural herb obtained from the gum of the boswellia serrata tree, traditionally used for supporting joint comfort.6

Grape Seed Extract
Grape seeds have rich antioxidant value. Antioxidants help to neutralize free radicals, the leading cause of inflammation of joints. Grape seeds nutritionally support blood circulation and collagen synthesis. 7

White Willow Bark Extract
White willow bark extract contains an active ingredient called Salicin which is converted to salicylic acid in the intestine. Salicylic acid is an analgesic is known to nutritionally reduce joint inflammation. This natural herb is commonly used by athletes to ease joint pain. White willow bark extract provides joint pain relief without the common side effects of aspirin. 8

Yucca Root Powder
This is a medicinal herb with active ingredients of steroidal saponins and polyphenolics like resveratrol and yuccaols. These help to reduce inflammation and ease joint pain. 9

Curcumin C3
Curcumin is the extract of a spice called turmeric. Traditionally, Curcumin C3 has anti-inflammatory properties and may nutritionally stimulate the production of cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone which controls the body's inflammatory response.10

Hyal Joint
Hyaluronic acid is found in the synovial fluid of joints. It is a gel-like liquid which lubricates the joint and acts as shock absorber. Hyaluronic acid carries essential nutrients to the cartilage that help maintain their elasticity. Those who suffer from joint pains are reported to have less hyaluronic acid in the joints. Hyal joint is the supplementary form of hyaluronic acid made usually from rooster combs. Studies indicate hyal joint supplementation can nutritionally help to reduce joint pain, improve flexibility and may increase range of motion. 11

Green Lipped Mussel Extract
Green Lipped Mussel Extract contains a blend of omega 3 fatty acids including EPA and DHA. These are known to inhibit inflammation in the body. Green lipped mussel extract also contains mucopolysaccharides (another name for glycosaminoglycans), found in synovial fluid. It supports mobility of joints and supports cartilage health. 12

Bioperine
Bioperine is an extract from the fruit of the black pepper plant. This natural herb may enhance your body's ability to absorb nutrients. 13

Interhealth Collagen Type 2
Interhealth collagen type 2 (UC-II) exhibits the ability to promote joint comfort considerably. It can help to increase range of motion and flexibility.. 14

DL-Phenylalanine
This is a blend of amino acids that supports joint comfort and joint health.15

As you age, your body's ability to manufacture and/or absorb vital nutrients necessary to keep cartilage lubricated and joints flexible is gradually lost. An insufficiency in any one or more of the nutrients listed above may adversely affect joint health. Stiffness of joints, loss of mobility and joint pain are common complaints caused by aging joints. Supplementing the body with essential nutrients will nutritionally supply the building blocks needed to support the body's natural ability to support joint health. GoFlex Advanced Joint Health Formula has been carefully formulated to provide the necessary components needed to nourish aging joints.

Secrets of Dental Health are revealed in National Smile Month

National Smile Month runs simultaneously in both the UK and USA from 17th May to 16th June 2009. In the UK it is promoted by the British Dental Health Foundation while in the USA Oral Health America is co-ordinating the thirty day event. This is the first time that National smile Month will take place across the UK and the USA.

National Smile Month takes a very holistic approach to dental health. In fact, one of the main thrusts of the month's event is to explain to the general public in simple terms the links that exist between good oral health and overall body health. Most of the population of the UK and the USA would be very surprised indeed to learn that there are strong links that exist between gum disease and the following health conditions:

  • heart disease
  • strokes
  • diabetes
  • premature and low birth weight babies

National Smile Month is encouraging Brits and Americans on both sides of the pond to make the connection between a healthy mouth and a healthy body. Recently conducted medical research has shown that bacteria or infections in the mouth impact overall health. The research has also shown that systemic diseases affect the gums and teeth.

The disease that causes cavities or tooth decay is actually known as Caries. This disease is a transmissible infection but the good news is that it can be managed through proper oral hygiene. Management of Caries includes:

  • brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice a day and flossing
  • access to appropriate levels of fluoride in drinking water
  • a carbohydrate-regulated diet that cuts down on sugary foods and drinks
  • proper salivary function
  • regular visits to your dentist

Periodontal disease is a disease of the gums that affects more than 30% of the adult population. Periodontal disease is often under diagnosed and undertreated, despite mounting evidence of its relationship to systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and pre-term, low-birth weight babies. A key theme of National Smile Month is to urge people to ask their dentists, dental hygienists, and health care providers about periodontal disease and how it can affect overall health.

Another publicised technique is the use of dental sealants which are a thin plastic coating placed over the chewing surfaces of molar teeth. These sealants are effective in preventing and even reversing tooth decay. Dental sealants are most commonly used on children, especially at the ages when new permanent teeth erupt.

Oral Health America has released the staggering statistic that each year in the USA over 51 million school hours are lost as a result of problems related to tooth decay. Oral Health America has taken the issue directly to schools and is active in leading proper oral hygiene demonstrations for school children.

The state of Kansas has realised that oral health problems in children are a precursor for more serious health problems as children reach adulthood. Kansas has been a leader in making oral health a priority. In a multi faceted campaign that has been in place since 2004 the southern state has improved its overall ratings from a "D+" to a "B". Kansas' strategies to improve oral health care included:

  • Expansion of oral disease prevention measures, especially school-linked oral health programs, use of fluoride varnish and dental sealants, and community water fluoridation
  • Education of those in a position to stop the cycle of oral disease, including pregnant women, parents of young children, and caregivers of vulnerable populations
  • Promotion of healthy childhood nutrition, especially pre-school and school nutrition programs
  • Reduction of tobacco use

The British Dental Health Foundation is a registered charity in the UK and has been established for over 38 years. The Foundation's key messages have been at the heart of its charity work for many years and the 3 decades since the inception of National Smile Week. It's Chief Executive, Dr Nigel Carter stated:

"it is vital that we use National Smile Month to educate the public on the often underestimated importance of good oral healthcare."

  • Drink Well: The Health Benefit of Black and Green Tea

Scientific studies continue to show that green tea is good for you. Tea began as a Chinese medicinal drink, and modern science proves just how green tea is good for you. In traditional Chinese medicine, tea helps to clear the eyes and head, resolve excess phlegm, promote urination, relieve toxins, aid the digestion, and quench thirst. As with so many foods and medicines, the traditional Chinese medicinal thoughts are being proven scientifically in modern times. Today, there is ample evidence that tea is good for you as a daily tonic in the interest of preventing or treating a wide range of maladies, including: cancer, hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, premature aging, food poisoning, dental decay and bad breath, and even arthritis.

How Is Green Tea Good For You?

    • Tea is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant: besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. It has also been effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots. The latter takes on added importance when you consider that thrombosis (the formation of abnormal blood clots) is the leading cause of heart attacks and stroke.

    • Green tea may be good for your waistline. In November 1999, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published the results of a study at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Researchers found that men who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories than those given only caffeine or a placebo.

Green Tea Is Good For Your Immune System

    • A Japanese report found that men who drank ten cups of green tea per day stayed cancer-free for three years longer than men who drank less than three cups a day (there are approximately 240 - 320 mg of polyphenols in three cups of green tea). Meanwhile, a study by Cleveland's Western Reserve University concluded that drinking four or more cups of green tea per day could help prevent rheumatoid arthritis, or reduce symptoms in individuals already suffering from the disease.

    • Scientists at the Saitama Cancer Research Institute discovered that there were fewer recurrences of breast cancer, and the disease spread less quickly, in women with a history of drinking five cups or more of green tea daily.

Green Tea Is Good For Your Prevention & Treatment Of Cancer

    • Scientists also discovered that EGCG from green tea can help to prevent metastasis, or the movement and spreading of cancer cells from one organ or tissue to the other by bloodstream or lymph. Cancer cells secrete special enzymes in order to enter and colonize tissues. Research shows that EGCG stops the secretion of these special enzymes.

    • A case study that was done in China, reports that those women who drank green tea regularly had a 50% lower risk of developing esophageal cancer. Men showed less risk as well, but not as significant as women.

    • Researchers from Sweden reported that green tea blocked the development of new blood vessels in the lungs. By blocking the development of new blood vessels in the lungs, tumors are less likely to grow and metastasize. Scientists believe that EGCG plays a significant rule in blocking the development of tumors. Similar results were achieved in breast cancer, colon cancer and melanoma studies. It is believed that drinking green tea for an extended period of time will help to prevent and might cure cancer naturally.

    • The antioxidants found in green tea--called catechins--may selectively inhibit the growth of cancer. In laboratory studies using animals, catechins scavenged oxidants before cell damage occurred, reduced the number and size of tumors, and inhibited the growth of cancer cells. National Cancer Institute researchers are investigating the therapeutic and preventive use of tea catechins against a variety of cancers.

    • One Chinese study involving over 18,000 men found green tea drinkers were about half as likely to develop stomach or esophageal cancer as men who drank little tea, even after adjusting for smoking and other health and diet factors.

    • In the laboratory, studies have shown green tea catechins act as powerful inhibitors of cancer growth in several ways: They scavenge oxidants before cell injuries occur, reduce the incidence and size of chemically induced tumors, and inhibit the growth of tumor cells. In studies of liver, skin and stomach cancer, chemically induced tumors were shown to decrease in size in mice that were fed green and black tea.

Green Tea Is Good For Your Teeth

    • Green tea is good for your teeth, the catechins prevent decay by killing the bacteria (Streptococcus mutans) that cause dental plaque. Green tea also contains fluoride. One cup of brewed green tea contains around 0.3-0.5 mg of fluoride. This is an optimal level of fluoride according to dentists. As we all know, fluoride builds in our teeth's enamel, making it more resistant against acidic environment, of our mouth. Green tea also eliminates other bacteria that responsible for bad breath. According to researchers, green tea polyphenols can inhibit, by 30%, the growth of bacteria that causes unpleasant breath.

    • A study at the Beijing Dental Hospital found consuming 3 grams of green tea a day, or about 2 cups, along with the application of a tea extract reduced the size and proliferation of leukoplakia, a precancerous oral plaque.

    • Recent research suggests that green tea is good for your HDL cholesterol ( the "good one") and lowers triglyceride levels. Several tests have been done. And green tea extract has been shown to be good for your cholesterol.

Green Tea Is Good For Your Blood Pressure

    • At the the end of a 5 week experiment, one group with the regular diet showed blood pressure increases. For the catechin fed group, the blood pressure stayed normal. After this initial testing the scientists switched the diets for the two groups. This switch led to a reversal of the blood pressure trends. The study concluded that drinking moderate amounts of green tea each day can help to prevent high blood pressure.

The catechins in green tea have additionally been shown to help prevent excess cholesterol in the blood, killing the bacteria that causes food poisoning, lower blood sugar, additionally green tea is good for your high blood pressure by suppressing the production of angiotensn II. Catechin is also a strong anti-oxidant, which aids in aging related concerns.

Green and white tea leaves are less processed than oolong or black teas, which prevents oxidation and retains the highest levels of beneficial compounds. But all tea is good for you, so find the ones you like and drink them daily!

Healthy Dark Chocolate and Your Diabetic Health -- Part 2

In part 1 of this 2 part series exploring the potential health benefits of organic dark chocolate for the current or pre-diabetic, we focused on the very high concentrations of 'flavanols' in cocoa and their positive effect for a healthy cardiovascular system. We will now look at several specific studies and their results relating to diabetes control.

By introducing a consistent, high quality source of the flavanols found in dark chocolate, insulin function is improved, blood sugar is better controlled, blood pressure is lowered, and the threat of blood sugar build up and pre-diabetes is lessened.

A recent study at the University of L'Aquila in Italy confirmed these vascular effects. Over a 15 day period, 15 healthy test subjects were given 100g of a typical dark chocolate, (with 500 mg of flavonoids), and 15 others were given 100g of white chocolate (which has NO measurable flavonoids).

After a 7 day washout period following the first test, the groups were reversed and tested for another 15 days. At the end of each period, oral glucose tolerance tests were performed to calculate the insulin resistance and the quantitative insulin sensitivity. Systolic blood pressure was also checked.

Davide Grassi published the results in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition":

"Dark, but not white, chocolate decreases blood pressure and improves insulin sensitivity in healthy persons."

"Nitric oxide bioavailability deeply influences insulin-stimulated glucose uptake and vascular tone."

"These findings indicate that dark chocolate may exert a protective action on the vascular endothelium also by improving insulin sensitivity".

A sidebar of note for current or pre-diabetics.

Obesity is a known risk factor for insulin resistance. Cocoa powder (the origin of dark chocolate) has been proven to be an effective appetite suppressant. A check of the ingredients on the label of many of the popular diet supplements will list cocoa powder high on the list.

So, a portion of good quality dark chocolate before a meal will not only provide your vascular system with a needed antioxidant boost, but you may also gain benefit against the 'battle of the bulge'.

Another healthy dark chocolate fact for diabetics is the type of fat contained in cocoa.

Two thirds of the fats in dark chocolate are 'heart healthy'. A study published in "Free Radical Biology Medicine" found that dark chocolate "actually increased HDL (good cholesterol) concentrations and reduced the oxidation of the total cholesterol".

Where do you find 'quality' Healthy Dark Chocolate?

MXI Corporation's "Xocai" dark chocolate products are independently tested and have the highest antioxidant ratings. (Using the United States Department of Agriculture's Standardized Antioxidant Value System)

They use an exclusive, patented, cold pressed process that eliminates the ROASTING procedure, and significantly increases antioxidant retention. Of note to diabetics, their products are supplemented with acai berries and blueberries (both with very high antioxidant concentrations), and sweetened with low glycemic, natural ingredients (no raw sugars).

Dagoba dark chocolate products are also an excellent choice. Like Xocai, they are all organic, and while roasted, they are sweetened with unrefined cane sugar, not processed white sugar. As a comparison, a Hershey's "Healthy" Special Dark Chocolate bar tips the scales at 21 grams of sugar, while Dagoba has only 4 grams.

South Beach Diet offers dark chocolate products that are low on sugar content and have a high percentage of cocoa powder. These products are combined with other healthy natural ingredients to increase their nutritional value.

Most quality, organic, healthy dark chocolate is available only on the Internet. This allows consumers worldwide to shop and compare a variety of these delicious, nutritious products. This also allows the home based entrepreneur the opportunity to take advantage of this highly desirable, rapidly expanding, international market.

If you don't have the time or patience to shop online, then dark chocolate straight from the store shelves is still an option.

However, it is suggested that you check the ingredient list of the various products available, and select one that has cocoa or cocoa powder listed as the first ingredient. Unfortunately, many dark chocolate products that you will find have 'sugar' listed as the primary ingredient.

Enjoy your healthy dark chocolate in moderation, and, if diabetic, even with this encouraging information regarding antioxidants and healthy dark chocolate, please continue to monitor your personal situation and, if indicated, consult with your physician.
